Tallassee releases football schedule

Tallassee High School's Kalvin Levette (1) runs the football in for a touchdown late in the third quarter during Friday night's game against Childersburg High School.

The 2018 Tallassee football schedule has been released and features five playoff teams and three teams with at least 10 wins from last season. There is also one out-of-state team on the schedule.

Tiger coach Mike Battles confirmed the full schedule. While other area schools are struggling to fill out their schedule, Tallassee wound up filling theirs by going to Alabama’s neighbors to the east.

In week five, Tallassee will host Early County out of Blakely, Georgia. In the southwest corner of the state, not far from the state border. Early County is about 130 miles away from Tallassee.

“(Early County), we don’t know a whole lot about them,” Battles said. “But just the fact that this group has never played an inter-state game, that will bring some excitement.”

Tallassee plays only two teams on this year’s schedule it played last year (Elmore County and Handley). The Tigers open the season with three consecutive home games, the first of which is against Montgomery Catholic. Last season, the Knights went 10-2 and advanced to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.

The other two opponents for Tallassee that won at least 10 games are Carroll (11-1, advanced to second round of the Class 5A playoffs) in Week 4 and Beauregard (10-2, advanced to the Class 5A quarterfinals) in Week 10.

“It’s going to be tough,” Battles said. “We’re going to be one of the low men on the totem pole as far as coming back into 5A. It’s going to be challenging, but they all are. We’ve been playing in what I felt like is the toughest region in 4A the past two years with Leeds and Handley. There will be different challenges but it will still be challenging.”

When asked if the players are excited about the new schedule, Battles said not yet. The fact that so many players are participating in other sports means that their focus won’t fully be on football until sometime in May or June. The Tigers have been conducting morning workouts for football right now, but a lot of players are playing baseball, soccer or participating in track and field.
