Kayla Jolly of Tallassee High School and Morgan McGuire of Reeltown High School will receive the initial Veterans of Foreign Wars scholarships, Tallassee VFW Post 5035 announced.

A special committee of three selected this year's recipients.

"We have a system in place," Bill Lewis of VFW Post 5035 said. "It grades each and every applicant and these two came out on top."

Lewis said a number of factors are considered when choosing a scholarship recipient.

"It's all about the grade-point average, the quality of the essay, leadership,

community service and financial need was a part of it,” he said. “They are not chosen at random.”

Each student will receive $2,500 to be spent only on mandatory costs. The scholarship rolls over if the student does not use the entire amount.

Funding for the scholarships was boosted by the VFW’s second annual crawfish boil, which coordinators said was a huge success.

Tallassee’s VFW Post 5035 supports a variety of community events, including youth baseball and softball teams in Tallassee and Reeltown, and has been in existence since 1963. It serves veterans from Tallassee, Eclectic, Reeltown and Dadeville.
