A five-run third inning paved the way for Tallassee’s softball team Friday.
The Tigers captured an area championship in a 7-6 bout with Brewbaker Tech, advancing to next week’s regional tournament as a No. 1 seed.
Chloe Baynes, Chloe Davidson and Lexi Love each collected three hits as the first three hitters in Tallassee’s order. Davidson collected three RBIs, the Tigers’ only batter with more than one.
Alexis Walls started in the circle for Tallassee and responded to a four-run first inning by surrendering just two runs across her next five frames of work. Davidson threw one inning and picked up a save.
Trailing 4-0 in the top of the third inning, Tallassee rattled off four straight hits to score three runs, giving way to an RBI groundout from Brooke Royster to tie the game.
Jenna Manning picked up an RBI double three batters later to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead.
Davidson extended that advantage to 6-4 with an RBI single in the fourth, then grabbed another RBI single to re-extend it to 7-5 after the Rams scored.
Brewbaker Tech cut the lead to one again at 7-6 on a sixth inning RBI single, and held runners on the corners with only one out.
Tallassee turned a critical double play when Manning caught a fly ball and fired it to third base, where the Rams’ runner had failed to tag up.
Davidson allowed just one baserunner in her one inning of relief, striking out Brewbaker Tech’s last hitter to secure the win.
