Tallassee’s baseball team started off the season on a high note with a 5-4 victory over Clay Central on Monday afternoon. Casey Baynes earned the win on the mound, throwing two innings in relief of Jake Burton, who struck out seven in five innings of work.
Burton helped his own cause early on by going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, and Baynes also was 2-for-4 with a double. Reece Graham notched a single and scored two runs.
Tallassee (1-0) will travel to Park Crossing for a Thursday matchup at 5 p.m.
Reeltown hopes to make return to playoffs
After going 1-2 at Class 2A South Central Regional tournament a year ago, Reeltown’s softball team has a bitter taste in its mouth.
Luckily for the Rebels, they return quite a few starters and are looking to once again make a run at the postseason. Ace Ayriana Stoneback returns in the circle for her senior season, and she’ll be backed up by what was a prolific offense a year ago.
Morgan McGuire (OF) was the team’s offensive powerhouse, putting up a batting average of .483, and she’ll be back this year. Katlyn Jaye (C) and Kayli Hornsby (SS), both of whom had over .400 batting averages, will be back.
Also returning are second baseman Kelsey Jaye and outfielder Ashlynn Thomas.
For the baseball team, the Rebels advanced to the second round of the Class 2A playoffs before being ousted by J.U. Blackshear. Reeltown won its area and hosted an opening-round playoff series, which it dominated against Samson.
The difference for the baseball team is the Rebels graduated a handful of their top players, and Horseshoe Bend will be coming for them in the area.
