The Tallassee High Tigers knocked off Beauregard 9-1 Thursday claiming the area championship and earning a berth into the Gulf Shores-hosted 5A Regional Tournament beginning Friday. The Tigers - in the win - were led defensively by junior Jordan Walters and senior third baseman Madelyn Martin.
“We’ve come a long way,” said Martin after the game. “It means a lot. This is my last time on this field and I wanted to do good. I had a good game.”
Martin and Walters were key to the Tigers taking control of the game in the sixth.
With bases loaded and a 5-1 lead, Walters turned on a Hornet offering and drove it into the outfield pushing a run home. Two batters later, Martin turned and drove a pitch deep to push two runs home and give Tallassee an 8-1 lead. She scored on a Hannah Martin single for the game’s final run and tally of 9-1.
Walters - Tallassee’s Ace throughout the season - was focused on holding Beauregard’s bats’ at bay.
“Just throw strikes,” Walters said after the game. “That was what I was thinking.”
That lockdown mindset permeated throughout the Tigers defense as Beauregard was held without a runner in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
Tallassee will take on the Area 1 runner-up at Noon on Friday.
