The Tallassee versus Elmore County football game was postponed in the third quarter after a threat to the stadium Burt Haynie Field.
According to Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin, a threat was called in or made surrounding the game to possibly shoot the stadium up in the fourth quarter.
The threat came via social media.
“(We) received the threat through Facebook and Elmore County decided to call the game in caution,” Tallassee Police Department chief Todd Buce said. “I haven’t seen the post so it’s unsubstantiated at this time.”
Although the game occurred at Elmore County High School, which is out of his jurisdiction, Fifth Judicial Circuit District Mike Segrest was made aware of the situation immediately and also said it was unsubstantiated.
“What I can tell you is that I’ve verified that there was an unsubstantiated threat, and airing on the side of caution which I think they had to do, they suspended the game,” Segrest said.
He reiterated there is no known threat at this time, but the stands were evacuated and teams sent home after immediately returning to the locker rooms.
The game will not be resumed at a later date, according to Elmore County coach Kyle Caldwell and principal Jason Eason.
“Some folks were arrested for having firearms supposedly,” Tallassee superintendent Dr. Brock Nolin said.
According to Buce, there were no arrests made and no firearms found at the stadium.
