Memories are being made once again at the Mt. Vernon Theater in Tallassee.
The ribbon was cut Thursday for Mt. Vernon Performing Arts Center. The new name is reference to all that new owners Bill Patterson and the father-son team of Joey and Barry Wiginton want to bring to the historic downtown Tallassee theater.
“We are doing it for everyone in the community,” Patterson said. “We want everyone to benefit from it.”
The theater first opened in 1935 and closed for 50 years in 1968. It reopened briefly about six years ago.
It has seen the likes of Hank Williams grace the stage inside.
The new theater features new lighting and sound to hold musical performances, plays and movies.
”We will do Christmas movies all during the season,” Wiginton said. “We have Santa too.”
Christmas movies are currently being shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday in December. There are also movies at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $12.
