The general election to fill the vacant Alabama State Senate Seat for District Five will be held on Tuesday, June 24. The seat was vacated when former Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed resigned the position in December 2024 to take a position on Governor Kay Ivey’s Workforce Transformation staff as senior advisor.
Candidates for the senate position are the Democratic nominee Ryan Cagle and the Republican nominee Matt Woods. Both Cagle and Woods are Walker County natives, and also current residents of the county. Woods was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 2022, where he currently serves.
Cagle defeated Sarah Watkins 222-137 in the March 11 Democratic primary. Only 0.35 percent of the eligible voters cast a ballot during the primary, with many precincts throughout the district tallying no votes. Woods had no opposition within his party for the seat, so there was not a Republican primary.
Only 53 votes were cast in Fayette County during the March 11 primary.
The Alabama State Senate District Five seat covers all of Fayette, Lamar and Walker counties, and a portion of Jefferson and Tuscaloosa counties.
Polls for the special general election will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on June 24. A picture identification is required for registered voters to cast a ballot.
