Editor’s notes: This is the second of two stories featuring Reeltown students who attended the Alfa Youth Leadership Conference.
While there is something to being a natural-born leader, many still must develop their own leadership skills to achieve greatness.
In early November, Reeltown students Colton Siggers, a 10th-grade student, and Lane Chamness, a freshman, attended the two-day Alfa Youth Leadership Conference.
The conference aimed to teach student leadership skills and build upon who they are as leaders in their own community.
“Definitely how to be a better leader,” Chamness said of what he learned. “It might sound cliche but that’s what we go there to do. I met a lot of new people and going there to be a leader is the main part and I think that’s what I learned the most about.”
This conference was held by Alabama Farmers Federation involving team building activities and guest speakers — motivational speaker Rhett Laubach and Alfa Insurance Leadership Consultant Nicole Pinkham.
Chamness said he has sought leadership roles through sports and now he is even more invested in finding those leadership opportunities after attending this conference. He plays baseball, football and basketball for the Rebels.
Along with leadership, attendees also learn about agriculture advocacy. The students do a service project during the conference as well and this year’s was assembling Christmas toys for Children’s of Alabama patients.
Chamness said when he heard about the conference, he knew it was something he wanted to apply for to develop his leadership skills, and he was thankful for this opportunity.
After high school, Chamness wants to go to Auburn University and become an ag teacher.
