The Lake Martin Resource Association is a cornerstone for the community when it comes to lake advocacy, environmental work and safety. Let’s not only appreciate this organization but also find ways to get involved.
There are a number of projects LMRA heads up that people can partake in. One is the Treasured Mile Program, in partnership with Russell Lands and Alabama Power Company. This program allows individuals, clubs, schools, etc. to adopt an Alabama Power Company Island around the lake to help clean up the litter nearby.
For something that isn’t a year around commitment, there’s also Renew Our Rivers. This is a lakewide cleanup every first Friday and Saturday in November. The cleanup is generally from 8 a.m. to noon with dumpster sites located around the lake for volunteers to put the collected litter.
One of the biggest programs LMRA does is managing the buoys along the lake. And one of the biggest ways to help with that is becoming a member of LMRA. Roughly 65% of the LMRA’s budget goes toward buoy management and since LMRA is fully funded through donations and memberships, this is one of the easiest ways to support.
Anyone can sign up to be a member through LMRA’s website. Annual membership options include $40 for deckmate, $75 for captain and $100 for admiral. Members receive a "LMRA member" decal, regular newsletters, discount certificate for Lakeside Address signs, enrollment in the $5000 Property Protection Program and an invitation to the Annual Member Fun Breakfast.
Whether it be through membership, volunteer work or a yearly donation, we can all do our part to preserve the beauty of Lake Martin.
