This past weekend, a protest took place outside the Tallapoosa County Courthouse that drew participation from both supporters and opponents. Whether you stood in favor of the “No Kings” protest or stood in opposition, we view the event as a success for both sides. Why? Because both groups exercised their constitutional rights, made their voices heard, and kept the demonstration peaceful and respectful. In today’s climate, that’s something to recognize and appreciate.
The right to peacefully assemble is a cornerstone of the First Amendment, and as journalists, we are firm supporters of the First Amendment rights. We commend all those who showed up, especially given the intense summer heat. Despite the conditions, individuals from both sides stood firm in their beliefs and remained as respectful as possible.
Speaking out for what you believe in is not always easy, and it often requires courage and conviction. We respect those who took time out of their weekend to stand up, speak out and participate in this civic process. We hope to see more peaceful protests in the future whether it be for local, state or national issues.
We also want to extend our sincere thanks to individuals on both sides who were willing to speak with us. Your openness and willingness to engage in thoughtful conversation allowed us to better understand your perspectives and share your voices with the broader community. We look forward to continuing that dialogue and helping tell your stories.
